Abstract

The single point diamond turning (SPDT) method is an ultra-precise machining (UPM) method and holds the unique position in the field of material removal mechanical machining such as turning, milling, drilling, and more. The surface quality produced by the SPDT method is typically characterized by a surface shape tolerance of a micrometer fraction and a nanometer scale surface roughness (RS). Achieving such fine surfaces requires good assessment and control of factors affecting surface quality ultra-precision (UP) products. This paper focuses on surveying the influence of cutting methods (CM) in the SPDT on surface quality in general and surface roughness in particular. The main CM mentioned include Slow Tool Servo (STS) and Fast Tool Servo (FTS). The related research results in the SPDT method and some comments are presented in order to contribute to improving the products surface quality in the SPDT method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
