This study present an antenna design with multiple microstrip patches that can be applied in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed array occupies four elements organized in a 2 × 2 configuration as the radiators. By generating orthogonal operating modes, the strong mutual coupling effect between the elements can significantly reduced. The simulated data indicates that the proposed MIMO array produces a good impedance matching at 4.8 GHz, and the coupling between each pair of radiators are lower than −15 dB. Besides, the distances between the edge of each element towards the E- and H-plane are 0.032λ and 0.026λ, respectively. The suggested configuration could be a promising option for 5G Internet of Things (IoT) devices thanks to its low-complexity decoupling design. Moreover, it has a potential for expansion into a large-scale array with 2 × N elements. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
